Instagram says “Action blocked”. Is my account banned?

A ClearRules guidePublished: Updated: How we prepare guides

The short answer

Read the message and check which action is failing. If your profile opens but you cannot comment, like or follow, that does not necessarily mean the whole account is suspended. Pause that action, read the on-screen instructions and check Account Status.

What to do

Use the notice you received as your guide. Advice about a “safe number of actions per hour” does not explain your particular restriction.

  1. Open the message shown when the action fails. Save its text, the date and the action you tried. Follow any timeframe or instructions given. Pause repeated attempts; if you were posting identical comments in bulk, stop those too.
  2. Open Account Status from your profile menu and read any restriction details shown. If an option to report a mistake or request a review is available, explain which action is blocked and why you think the decision is wrong.
  3. If the notice mentions automated data collection (scraping) or a third-party app, follow its security instructions and stop that activity. If there is no restriction decision and the feature appears broken, report a technical problem through Instagram Help. Include the error text, time, device and a screenshot without passwords or codes.

Which situation applies to you?

My account opens, but an action is blocked

Save the message and pause the blocked action. In Account Status, check for an end time or a review option. Follow the details in your notice.

Check account restrictions
I already follow 7,500 accounts

Instagram has a total following limit. Check it separately from a temporary restriction and manually review follows you no longer want. It is not an allowed hourly action rate.

About the following limit
A feature shows an error, but there is no restriction notice

Describe the exact action, error, time and device. Add a screenshot without codes. A technical report describes a malfunction but does not replace an available appeal.

Illustrative example

After posting the same promotion under many posts, you can no longer send comments. Pause the activity, open the notice and follow its instructions. If you think the restriction is wrong, check whether a review is available.

More examples

I cannot follow another account

You already follow 7,500 accounts.

What to do

Instagram has a total following limit of 7,500. This is a separate possible cause: manually review follows you no longer want. That total is not an allowed hourly rate.

The account works, comments do not

Sign-in and feed viewing work, but commenting shows an error without a duration.

What to do

Read the message and check Account Status. If no duration is given, the message does not tell you how long the restriction will last. If you can send a technical report, describe the error and include a screenshot.
