How do I stop other people remixing my Instagram posts or downloading my Reels?

A ClearRules guidePublished: How we prepare guides

The short answer

For people publishing their own Instagram posts or Reels, remixing and standalone Reel downloads need separate checks. Instagram offers account-wide reuse controls and, on Android, a control for an individual post. The verified download instructions below cover publishing a Reel on Android. Turning a setting off does not retrieve copies or remove existing remixes.

What to do

Before changing anything, confirm the selected account, whether it is public or private, and whether you want a change for all content or one item. Keep links to affected posts and screenshots of the current settings. Use the official Instagram app; labels may differ by language or app version.

  1. Decide which result you need: no new remixes, no standalone Reel downloads, or both. Check the account and affected post first; the controls do different jobs.
  2. For account-wide reuse on Android or iPhone, open your profile, then the menu. Under How others can interact with you, open Sharing and reuse.
  3. Find Allow people to create with and reuse your content. Turn off the Posts and/or Reels switches for the content types you want to restrict. Reopen the page to check the displayed state.
  4. For one existing post on Android, open that post, then Options at the bottom right → Remixing → Turn off reuse. Confirm Turn off. This individual-post path was not verified for iPhone.
  5. For downloads when publishing a Reel on Android, record or edit the Reel, choose Next at the bottom right, then More options at the bottom. Look for Allow people to download your reels.
  6. Turn that download switch off and choose whether the change applies to all Reels or only the one being uploaded. Read the scope shown before confirming it. Go Back; choose Share only if you also intend to publish the Reel. Do not create an unwanted public post just to test a setting. If you leave without publishing, do not assume the download change was saved. For an existing Reel or an account-setting change, follow the relevant official Help instructions.
  7. Check the limits against your goal. New Reels shared from public accounts after downloads became available can be downloaded unless restricted; public accounts belonging to people under 18 have downloads off by default, and private-account Reels cannot be downloaded through this feature. Previously downloaded files and existing remixes are not recalled.
  8. If the controls are missing or a change does not persist, record the device, app version, account, affected link and exact screen. Consult the official Help pages below for your device; the download path for an already-published Reel was not verified here. Use the app’s problem-reporting option if available, with screenshots that exclude private messages and credentials.

The situation

Illustrative example

You publish a drawing tutorial and want people to watch it without creating new remixes. You turn off reuse for posts and Reels, then check the download setting separately before publishing your next Reel.

The situation and an improvement

What causes the issue

Turn off one remix switch and assume all copies and audio reuse have disappeared.

A more accurate version

Check reuse and download controls separately, choose the intended scope, and account for existing copies and remixes.

More examples

One older post attracts unwanted remixes

You still want other posts to be reusable, but not this particular post.

What to do

On Android, use that post’s Remixing menu to turn off reuse. Do not expect it to remove remixes that already exist.

A new Reel should not have a download button

Your account is public, and you are preparing a new Reel on Android.

What to do

Before publishing, turn off Allow people to download your reels in More options and check whether you selected this Reel or all Reels. Review remix controls separately.

We read the official source listed for this topic. Other Meta rules are reviewed separately.

Instagram Help pages on remix/reuse controls and Reel downloads were read on 10 October 2026. Account-wide reuse instructions cover Android and iPhone; the individual-post reuse route and download steps while publishing were verified for Android only. Instructions inside collapsed sections for downloads on an existing Reel or through account settings were not verified. No account was tested. Translated menu labels are descriptive and may differ in the app. Screenshots, scope checks and reopening settings are ClearRules precautions, not promises about availability or enforcement.
