How do I delete my Instagram account? What if I want to come back?

A ClearRules guidePublished: Updated: How we prepare guides

The short answer

Choose temporary deactivation for a break. If you want to leave permanently, choose account deletion and save the data you need first. These are different actions. Uninstalling the phone app does not delete the account itself.

What to do

Before confirming, check the username and selected action, especially if your personal Instagram, work Instagram and Facebook are linked in settings.

  1. If you need photos or other data, request an export first. Wait for the file and check that it contains what you need. A separate guide is linked below. After permanent deletion, that account’s data cannot be downloaded through Instagram’s export tool.
  2. Open Instagram settings. If Accounts Center is available, the official Help path is Personal details → Account ownership and control → Deactivation or deletion. Labels in your app may differ.
  3. Select the exact Instagram account you want to act on. For a break, look for deactivation; to leave permanently, choose deletion. If you see Meta Account settings instead of Accounts Center, open the current Help for your chosen action below.
  4. Read the final screen before confirming. For deletion, keep the displayed date and cancellation terms. If you change your mind, sign in before that deadline and follow the offered cancellation process. Do not assume a universal 30-day window: Meta says it varies by region.
