I sent the wrong text in Instagram. Can I correct it?

A ClearRules guidePublished: How we prepare guides

The short answer

Meta documents editing an Instagram message within 15 minutes of sending: press and hold your sent message and choose Edit. This changes the message; it does not prove that the recipient never saw the original. For a material correction, explain the change clearly rather than relying on a silent edit.

What this answer is based on

What to do

Check the conversation, original sending time and exact text before editing. Confirm the corrected wording appears in the chat.

  1. Open the correct conversation and locate your own sent text. Check its sending time; the documented window starts when you send it, not when the recipient reads it.
  2. Press and hold the message and look for Edit. Use the option actually shown; do not confuse it with deleting the conversation or unsending.
  3. Change the wording, review names, amounts and dates, then confirm using the editor’s control. Check the message in the conversation afterward.
  4. If the change affects an arrangement, send a clear correction such as ‘Correction: 19:00, not 18:00.’ Do not assume the recipient has reread the edited version.
  5. If Edit is missing or the 15 minutes have passed, send a new correction. Check current in-app Help for your app/version; repeated tapping cannot extend the published window.
  6. For text you want removed rather than corrected, read the separate unsend guide and its limits. Do not assume removing your chat copy removes the recipient’s copy.
  7. If the message exposed a password, one-time code or sensitive document, treat it as an exposure and secure the affected account or seek appropriate help. Editing the text is not a security fix.

The situation

Illustrative example

You wrote that the meeting is at 18:00 instead of 19:00. Correct the message if Edit is available, then send a short clarification if the other person may already have made plans.

The situation and an improvement

What causes the issue

Change a wrong meeting time and assume everyone noticed.

A more accurate version

Verify the edit and explicitly tell the recipient what changed when it matters.

More examples

More than 15 minutes have passed

The correction is still important but Edit is unavailable.

What to do

Send a concise new message with the correct information. Do not use an unofficial app promising unlimited edits.

A credential was sent

You pasted a password into the wrong chat.

What to do

Secure the affected account through its official settings. Do not treat an edit or unsend as proof that the secret was not copied.

Source reviewed:

We read the official source listed for this topic. Other Meta rules are reviewed separately.

Primary source reread: . This does not mean every supplementary source, translation or app screen was rechecked.

Meta’s 4 March 2024 DM announcement, displaying an update date of 3 April 2024, was read on 15 October 2026. It supports the 15-minute window and press-and-hold Edit route. Current Help could not be verified: the accessible Help route redirected to login/temporary-block content. No workaround was used. We did not test a live conversation, devices, editing limits or history visibility; this is not a newly announced feature.
