Why do I keep missing posts from accounts I follow on Instagram?

A ClearRules guidePublished: How we prepare guides

The short answer

Look for Following to see posts from accounts you follow in chronological order. Favorites lets you choose a smaller set of accounts to read. These views help when Home’s mix of followed accounts and recommendations makes it hard to catch up. Availability and menu labels may vary.

What to do

Check that you are using the right Instagram account, then choose a few accounts whose posts you want to keep up with. You do not need to reset recommendations, delete your activity or change your privacy settings.

  1. Open Home and look for Following or Favorites. Meta’s original instructions put them under the Instagram name at the top left. If your app looks different, search official in-app Help for those names.
  2. Choose Following to catch up with accounts you follow. For a shorter list, open Favorites and select the accounts you want to include. Before confirming, check that you are choosing what you see, rather than who can see your own posts.
  3. Check the view’s name and the dates on its posts. If a particular post is missing, open its author’s profile and check that you still follow them. A missing feed item alone does not show that an account is restricted. If the feed controls fail, note the app version and report the problem through official Help.

The situation

Illustrative example

Example: a pottery student keeps missing her teacher’s posts between suggested videos. She opens Following and adds the teacher to Favorites instead of resetting all her recommendations.

The situation and an improvement

What causes the issue

Reset the algorithm because a familiar account rarely appears.

A more accurate version

Open Following or Favorites, then look for the missing post on its author’s profile.

More examples

The post has been removed

A bookmarked post no longer opens.

What to do

Following cannot recover it. Check the original link rather than repeatedly changing feed settings.

Private sharing is the real goal

You want only certain friends to see your next story.

What to do

Review Close Friends or the story audience. Adding someone to Favorites does not set that audience.
