Why is my Instagram username unavailable, and can I get my old username back?
The short answer
If a desired username is taken, Instagram recommends choosing an available variation. To change your own username, sign in and edit the correct profile, then read any availability or review message. If it changed without your permission, investigate account security before treating the problem as a routine rename.
What this answer is based onWhat to do
Keep your current username until Instagram accepts the replacement. Do not release it as a test or assume you can move a username between accounts instantly.
- Check the Username field, rather than the display name or a chat nickname. Record the exact error or review notice.
- Sign in and select the correct Instagram profile. Use its profile-editing controls or Accounts Center → Profiles where shown. Some people will see Meta Account settings during its gradual rollout; follow the controls offered.
- If the name is taken, try an available variation using periods, numbers, underscores or an abbreviation. Do not treat an apparently inactive account as yours to claim or invent a deadline after which its name must become free.
- To return to a previous username, try the normal edit flow. Instagram says this is usually possible if nobody new has taken it and it was not recently removed from an active Instagram account you do not own.
- If the change needs review, follow the notice and wait for Instagram’s decision. Accounts that reach many people may be reviewed, and followers may be notified of a username change. Check profile-sync settings before changing linked profile information.
- If you forgot the username, try the account’s associated email or phone number. If someone changed it without permission, check Instagram’s account-change notices and ask a trusted friend to confirm the current handle; then follow the hacked-account guide.
- For actual impersonation or a genuine trademark complaint, use the corresponding guide. Do not buy an account or username, invent infringement, or submit false reports to free a handle: Instagram’s terms prohibit account/username trading and misuse of reporting tools.
The situation
For example, a bakery wants a handle used by an account with no visible posts. It can try a recognizable available variation; the lack of posts does not justify an impersonation report or guarantee a transfer.
More examples
If the edit says review is required
The new username has not appeared immediately.
What to do
Keep the notice and check for the result in Instagram; do not assume the change failed or promise a review deadline.
If a stranger now controls your old profile
Your photos and followers remain, but the username changed and you cannot sign in.
What to do
Treat this as possible account takeover and use recovery for that account, rather than creating a replacement and trying to claim the handle.
