How do I report an Instagram account using my identity or pretending to be my business?
The short answer
First check whether this is a separate copycat profile or your own account being controlled by someone else. Report a copycat through Instagram’s impersonation options; use hacked-account recovery if the account itself was taken over. A genuine trademark or copyright complaint is a separate route with different eligibility and privacy implications.
What this answer is based onWhat to do
Save the exact profile link, username and relevant screenshots for your own records before reporting. Do not send identity documents, passwords or login codes to ClearRules or a recovery seller.
- Compare the exact account with your real profile. If your existing account was renamed or taken over, follow the hacked-account guide instead of reporting your own account as a copycat.
- Open the copycat’s profile, select its options menu, then Report and the account-reporting option. Choose the option for pretending to be someone else and select the accurate category. Labels can vary.
- If you have no Instagram account, use the impersonation form linked from Instagram’s official help article. An authorized representative can use that route too. The public form asks for one impersonating account per report.
- If a friend is being copied, you can flag the profile and tell the friend through a trusted contact method. The form says Instagram can act on reports from the affected person or their authorized representative; do not claim to be either if you are not.
- If Meta requests identity evidence, review its requirements and provide it only through the official Meta flow. ClearRules does not collect or check identity documents.
- For a genuine brand-rights complaint, use the trademark guide and official IP route only if you own the rights or are authorized. Meta regularly shares the rights owner’s name, reporter email and report details with the reported poster. Copied creative work may instead call for the copyright guide.
Compare the exact profiles. A matching name alone does not establish impersonation.

For example, a second profile copies a photographer’s name and portrait and asks clients for deposits. The photographer can preserve the profile link and misleading messages, then report the separate profile for impersonation.

What to do
Use the business or organization impersonation category where offered. Consider the trademark route only for a genuine rights complaint, not simply to obtain its username.
If you cannot open the copycat’s profile
You have its link but cannot reach the in-app reporting controls.
What to do
Keep the link and use Instagram’s official impersonation help to find the applicable route. Ask the affected person to report; do not use false details or coordinated false reports.
