My video has speech. How can people follow it with the sound off?

A ClearRules guidePublished: How we prepare guides

The short answer

For a prerecorded video, use captions where your editor offers them and check the words yourself. Auto-generated text is a starting point, not a finished transcript. If usable captions are unavailable, prepare a captioned copy before uploading or add a clear written summary.

What this answer is based on

What to do

Pay particular attention to names, numbers and words such as “not”. A single wrong word can reverse an instruction.

  1. Check the prerecorded video’s available caption options. If captions can be generated, enable them and compare the text with the recording, especially names, quantities and negations.
  2. Correct errors using an editing option only if it is actually offered. Otherwise make a corrected captioned video in an editor before uploading, or write the key information in the post.
  3. Watch the entire result with sound off. Check that text stays readable and appears at the right moment. After publishing, review the posted version and correct any misleading information you find.

The situation

Illustrative example

Example: a workshop video says “bring two pieces”, but captions say “bring ten pieces”. Someone watching on a bus follows the text. Check quantities before publishing.

The situation and an improvement

What causes the issue

The video has captions, but nobody has checked what they say.

A more accurate version

The wording and timing have been reviewed, and essential details are also easy to find.

More examples

Captions cover the demonstration

The words obscure a small part being fitted.

What to do

Change their position or the framing in your editor if possible, then replay the demonstration silently.

You are watching someone else’s video

No caption control appears on a recording you need to understand.

What to do

Ask the creator for a transcript or written explanation. Do not assume you can switch captions on for every video.
