Why will password reset or account recovery not complete?
The short answer
Check where the process stops: opening a link, entering a code, confirming identity or signing in with your new password. Each case needs different steps. If the password changed and you are now asked for another code, the reset may have worked: this may be an extra sign-in check called two-factor authentication (2FA).

What this answer is based onWhat to do
If you are still signed in on another device you own, keep that session. Keep the account set up in your authenticator app; deleting its entry will not help you check a code. Keep recovery codes and links private.
- Open the screen where recovery stopped. Save the exact error and note the last step you completed. Check the account name and selected verification method. Try on a familiar device while keeping any session that still works.
- Does a link in an email you requested fail? For Instagram, start a fresh reset through the official screen. For Facebook’s Invalid link error, Help suggests copying the entire link into the address bar, then restarting official reset if it still fails. Do not apply this to unexpected emails or links from supposed helpers.
- An authenticator code is available but rejected? Check the service and account entry and use a code before it changes. For Google Authenticator, check the device time and time zone: the current app uses system time. For another authenticator, consult its own Help.
- If the problem continues, read what the screen requires: an extra sign-in code, identity confirmation, recovery of changed contact details or a suspension appeal. Open the matching guide below. If the process keeps returning to the same screen, save the steps and a screenshot without passwords or codes for a bug report, if available.
If the usual steps did not help
When this guide helps: Use this when a recovery message arrived, a password changed, or a verification step started, but the process still does not reach your profile.
When you need a different route: If no requested message arrived, check delivery first. If the screen explicitly suspends or disables the account, follow that decision’s review instructions instead of repeating password resets.
Choose what is happening in your case
A reset link fails before you can set a password.
Check that it concerns the right account and a request you made. Start a fresh reset from the official sign-in screen when allowed. Do not forward the link to a “repair” service or assume changing a password happened just because an email arrived.
Next step: Forgot your password? Start hereAn existing authenticator code is rejected.
Match the service and account entry. For Google Authenticator, check expiry and correct device time. Do not delete the entry to recreate it. If you have lost the original method rather than an invalid code, follow second-factor recovery.
The new password works, then another code is required.
The password-reset step may be complete. Read the additional check and use a factor already configured for this account or an alternative actually offered. Starting the password reset again does not remove this requirement.
Next step: I know my password, but lost my authenticatorAn identity check is pending, rejected or loops.
Distinguish a submitted check awaiting a result from a camera/upload error. Keep its confirmation and follow the current screen’s instructions. For Instagram video selfies, use the specific guide; for a Facebook identity request, use that platform’s identity-confirmation help.
Next step: Instagram video selfie is not workingWhat to prepare
- Record the last completed step, the next prompt and exact error; mask codes and private links in screenshots.
- Keep your familiar device, working session and authenticator entries available.
Important: Observe any waiting period stated in your own flow. A generic Help page is not evidence that a check was submitted, accepted, or guaranteed to unlock your account.

Reviewed official reset, selfie and security-wait text in search, and read Google Authenticator Help. Detailed Instagram reset-link and Facebook reset Help remained inaccessible. No reset, identity submission or outcome was tested.

The situation
You changed your Facebook password, but login asks for an authenticator code. Resetting the password again brings you to the same screen. Open the authenticator configured for that Facebook. If it is gone, choose lost-second-factor help.
More examples
“My authenticator lists two Instagram accounts”
You copy the first entry’s code while signing into your work profile.
What to do
If the official screen asks for a code from an authenticator app, use the entry set up for the account or Meta Account it identifies. Do not choose by “personal” or “work” labels alone. Keep both entries while checking; do not assume a code works across profiles.
“The link takes me back to the start”
A fresh request also returns to the same screen.
What to do
Record the sequence and check whether the wrong account was selected. Compare the official website and app on your familiar device while keeping any working session. If a bug report is available, describe that repeated transition.

Official Help excerpts were reviewed earlier. The full Meta Help pages and the recovery process for a real account remain unverified. On 21 October 2026, Google Authenticator guidance, Meta’s account-recovery article and its Meta Account announcement were read to check specific security advice. These sources do not establish which recovery methods a particular account will be offered.
Include the guide link, language and wording that needs checking. Add an official source link if you have one. Do not send passwords, login codes or photos of identity documents.
