Do I need to disclose a video generated with AI?

A ClearRules guideUpdated: How we prepare guides

The short answer

Meta requires disclosure through its labelling tool for digitally created or altered photorealistic video and realistic-sounding audio.

What this answer is based on

What to do

Enable the available AI disclosure when posting. Replace the misleading caption with: “AI visualisation of how this street could look during a flood. This is not real footage.”

  1. Check whether viewers could mistake the created or altered video or audio for a real recording.
  2. Use the publishing disclosure tool provided for such AI material.
  3. Read the caption again: it should explain what is shown. A label does not fix a false description of an event.

The situation

Illustrative example

You generate a realistic video of a flooded city centre and caption it “Our town today.” The street is actually dry and no footage was filmed.

The situation and an improvement

What causes the issue

An AI-generated flood captioned “This is our town today.”

A more accurate version

“AI visualisation of a possible flood. This is not real footage,” alongside the provided AI disclosure.
