If I set my Facebook friends list to Only me, will nobody know who my friends are?

A ClearRules guidePublished: How we prepare guides

The short answer

Only me limits the full friends list on your own profile. It does not hide every connection: mutual friends may still appear, and another person’s profile can reveal your friendship according to their settings. This guide is for the friends-list setting on a personal Facebook profile, not Page followers, Instagram followers or the audience of your posts.

What to do

Decide whether you want to hide the full list, reduce your post audience or stop contact from a particular person. Those goals need different controls. Note which personal profile you are using and the current friends-list audience before changing it.

  1. Open the intended personal Facebook profile and confirm which account/profile you are changing. This control concerns the list of friends, not the list of people following a Page.
  2. In the documented computer route, select your profile picture → Settings & privacy → Settings. Under Audience and visibility, open How people find and contact you, then Who can see your friends list?
  3. Choose the audience that suits your goal, such as Friends or Only me, from the options actually offered. Read and complete any confirmation shown. Do not change friend-request, follower or post settings merely because they appear nearby.
  4. Reopen the same setting and check the saved audience. On mobile, use the official article’s device selector if labels differ; do not assume the desktop menu is identical. If you cannot locate the setting, pause rather than changing an unrelated privacy control.
  5. Use the profile’s View as option if available to inspect its public appearance. This checks the public view, not the view of every named friend. Seeing mutual friends does not by itself mean the full-list setting failed.
  6. If the full list still appears unexpectedly, first distinguish your signed-in owner view from a public view and check the selected profile and saved audience. Use official privacy help or the in-app technical report with the exact setting, device and a redacted screenshot if needed. Do not upload your whole friends list or login details.
  7. Review post visibility and unwanted contact separately if those were also concerns. Leave this change limited to the friends list unless you intend something more; hiding it does not require unfriending people, deleting a profile or paying for a privacy service.

The situation

Illustrative example

You want casual visitors to stop browsing your full list of contacts. Only me can address that list, but a mutual friend may still show up when a visitor opens your profile.

The situation and an improvement

What causes the issue

Choose Only me and assume every friendship is hidden everywhere on Facebook.

A more accurate version

Verify the saved list audience and public view while allowing for mutual friends and other people’s profile settings.

More examples

Mutual friends are still visible

Your list is set to Only me, but the public view still shows a shared connection.

What to do

Check whether it is a mutual-friend display rather than the full list. Facebook expressly warns that mutual friends can remain visible; do not treat this alone as a fault.

You want to hide a post from one person

You changed the friends list, but that person can still see a post.

What to do

Check the post’s own audience through the separate audience guide. Friends-list visibility does not set the audience for your photos, posts or stories.

Official Facebook Help excerpts on the friends list, public profile view and privacy troubleshooting were checked on 13 October 2026. The main page returned login/temporary-block content; the full page was not read and no workaround was attempted. The documented route is for a computer; mobile menus, a complete country list and every profile type were not individually verified. No account was tested. The date is our review date, not a Facebook policy-change date.
