How can I avoid losing a Facebook Live recording, and what if it is already missing?
The short answer
For people preserving broadcasts from their own profile or a Page they manage: Meta’s February 2025 policy announced 30-day retention for new Facebook Live recordings. Do not treat Facebook as your only archive. Check the current notice on each recording and preserve an available copy promptly.
What this answer is based onWhat to do
Prepare the profile or Page name, broadcast date, direct link, any current deletion notice, enough device storage and a private destination for the file. Keep a simple list: recording, deadline shown, download status and playback check. Do not include passwords or access tokens.
- Open Facebook yourself and confirm the correct profile or Page. Identify only recordings you own or are authorised to manage. List the broadcast dates and direct links. If Page access is missing, address that separately; a storage policy does not explain every access problem.
- Open each available recording and any current in-app storage notice. Write down the exact deadline and time zone if shown. Give the earliest deadline priority. Do not calculate a fresh grace period from an old article or assume an extension exists without an explicit current offer.
- For an accessible recording, inspect its own options for Download video or an equivalent clearly labelled download. Select the intended full recording, not a highlight. The precise current menu route is unverified; use the app’s current Help if the control is absent rather than an unofficial downloader that requests credentials.
- Choose a device location with enough free space, then wait for the file download to finish. Check the browser or device download result and the actual file, not just a saved post inside Facebook. If a bulk option is offered, confirm its date range and selected recordings before starting it.
- Open the downloaded file outside Facebook. Check the title or date against your list, duration, picture and sound at the start, middle and end. If the file is incomplete or will not play, keep the existing file while investigating and retry the official download while the recording remains available.
- Keep a second copy in storage you control and can access. Before any optional cloud transfer, read the destination, permissions and sharing setting; do not make a private recording public. Verify the resulting file there too. Keep the original available copy until both copies have been checked.
- If you also want a public highlight, treat that as a separate publishing decision. Choose the audience and review rights and personal details before sharing. Do not delete the full source merely because a short Reel was created; record exactly which parts your archive contains.
- If the recording is already missing, check your original recording device and any previous verified exports or backups. Preserve the notice and distinguish expiry from a separate removal decision. For an error on an available download, record the link, device, app version and exact error for official Help or the available problem-reporting route. No restoration or extension is guaranteed; do not pay strangers promising recovery.
The situation
Fictional example: a community organiser wants to keep a two-hour workshop. A short Reel and a saved link are not the full recording. They list the broadcast, download an available file and check the beginning, middle and ending before marking it backed up.
The situation and an improvement
A saved link or highlight is treated as a permanent backup of the whole broadcast.
Each recording has a checked deadline, a verified playable file and a clearly recorded backup status.
More examples
Fictional example: An old notice mentions extra time
A screenshot from a past migration offers a postponement.
What to do
Do not assume it still applies. Check the live notice for this recording and save the available file now rather than wait for an unverified extension.
Fictional example: The file downloaded but has no ending
The local file opens, but its duration is much shorter than the broadcast.
What to do
Mark it incomplete, preserve what you have and try the official download again while the recording is accessible. A successful download indicator alone did not prove a full backup.

We read the official source listed for this topic. Other Meta rules are reviewed separately.
Meta’s storage-policy announcement, published on 18 February 2025 and displaying an update dated 19 February, was read on 21 October 2026. This is a policy-announcement review, not a live account test. Current menus, individual deletion dates, export availability, regional exceptions and any still-open transition extension were not verified. Existing Help access restrictions were respected without retries. The inventory, file-integrity and fallback checklist below is ClearRules advice; a newly checked source does not restart an old notice or prove recovery is possible.
