Can I keep a post publicly readable while limiting who can comment?

A ClearRules guidePublished: How we prepare guides

The short answer

Facebook provides a separate commenting-audience control for public posts. This guide concerns your own posts on your personal profile. Decide whether you need a change for one post or the general public-post setting, then use an option available to you. Do not treat a narrower commenting audience as a change to who can view the post.

What to do

ClearRules advice: decide first whether you want fewer new comments, fewer viewers or removal of a particular abusive reply. Those require different checks. Keep the post link and, if useful, a privacy-safe screenshot of the current setting to compare with the result.

  1. Open your profile and your own intended post. Confirm that it is public and that you are not acting as a Page. Do not make a private post public merely to reveal a control.
  2. Choose the scope: this one post or your public posts more generally. Record the link and existing viewing audience. If threats or abuse are already present, preserve only the relevant details of those comments without spreading them further.
  3. For one post, open its menu and look for a control about who can comment, if offered. Its label may differ in your interface. Do not confuse it with editing the viewing audience or turning off notifications.
  4. Read the displayed options and their explanations. Choose the group whose comments you want, such as Friends if available. Check tags in the post: the official safety guide warns that a Friends choice can also include tagged people and their friends. An option’s short label may not describe every eligible person.
  5. For a broader change, locate the profile setting for comments on public posts, using settings search or a followers/public-content section if available. This is a separate check, not an automatic consequence of changing one post. Do not also change who can follow you or the public-profile-information setting without intending to.
  6. Save the choice if confirmation is requested, then reopen the same control. Check the selected option, profile and scope. Separately recheck the post’s viewing audience. Note the time and result; being able to comment as the author does not prove that everyone else can.
  7. Review existing comments separately. Do not assume they were deleted by the audience change. If moderation is needed, use the relevant comment’s available actions after reading what they do. Reporting a violation, hiding and deleting serve different purposes.
  8. If the control is missing, the choice will not save or the outcome is inconsistent, consult official Help for your device. For a technical problem report, keep the link, time, app or browser version and a redacted error screenshot. Do not delete and repost as a universal workaround. Until verified, treat the restriction as unconfirmed.

The situation

Illustrative example

Fictional example: Maya posts a public exhibition announcement on her profile. Visitors still need the opening hours, but unrelated arguments are filling the replies. She checks whether she can limit commenters on that particular post while retaining the intended viewing audience.

The situation and an improvement

What causes the issue

You turn off notifications or narrow the commenting audience and assume the post and all earlier replies are now hidden.

A more accurate version

You check viewing access, permission to add new comments and any action needed on earlier replies separately.

More examples

One difficult post, not the whole profile

Fictional example: one announcement has attracted an argument, but you still want questions from unfamiliar readers on other posts.

What to do

Start with that post’s own control. The official guide distinguishes it from the general setting and public profile information; verify the saved choice rather than changing everything at once.

An earlier abusive reply remains

Fictional example: you narrow the commenting audience but can still see an unpleasant reply posted earlier.

What to do

That old reply alone does not establish a failed setting. Review its separate actions and choose appropriate moderation; controlling new comments does not replace dealing with existing ones.

We read the official source listed for this topic. Other Meta rules are reviewed separately.

Primary source reread: . This does not mean every supplementary source, translation or app screen was rechecked.

On 20 October 2026, we read Meta’s announcements dated 31 March and 26 May 2021 and the comment-controls section on printed pages 21–22 of its official PDF hosted in an August 2022 directory. The first announcement also displays 6 April 2021. The separate public-profile-information control was checked only in indexed Help text. The current main comment Help page opened as a login screen, so its full text was not verified. These sources establish the purpose and different scopes, not today’s exact menu route, complete option list or availability on an individual account. No account was tested. Preflight checks, result recording and failure handling are ClearRules advice.

Report an inaccuracy

Include the guide link, language and wording that needs checking. Add an official source link if you have one. Do not send passwords, login codes or photos of identity documents.

Examples are made up to explain the guidance. Meta decides individual account and content cases.
