Could my Instagram video reach different people when I share it to Facebook?

A ClearRules guidePublished: How we prepare guides

The short answer

Yes: Instagram followers and Facebook friends are not the same audience. Check the Facebook destination and its audience before sharing. Meta’s video-publishing update also brings Feed and Reels defaults together where that flow is available, so read any audience-confirmation prompt rather than assuming an old default still answers your needs.

What this answer is based on

What to do

Before publishing, identify the destination profile or Page, intended viewers and any visible personal details in the video. If the audience is unclear, leave it unpublished.

  1. Confirm where the video will appear: the intended Facebook profile or Page, and whether Instagram sharing or another cross-posting option is enabled. Do not assume a familiar profile picture means the correct destination.
  2. Before posting, open the audience control actually shown for the video. Meta’s Reels announcement documents audience choices; the December composer update concerns Stories and Feed posts, not proof of every Reel editor. Read the current selection rather than relying on a past post.
  3. Choose only an offered audience that matches your goal. Public is not a limited family circle. For a personal profile, Friends or a narrower available option may suit a private event; check the exact exclusions shown.
  4. If prompted to confirm or reconcile Feed and Reels defaults, read both the selected audience and what the prompt changes. Meta announced a unified default in its revised flow. If you cannot determine the scope, pause and use Help before publishing.
  5. For an Instagram-to-Facebook share, check the Facebook audience separately. Official Help describes different initial defaults when no Facebook Reels default has been selected; that is not a substitute for inspecting the current setting and destination.
  6. After sharing, open the actual Reel on Facebook and inspect its audience control. For an older Reel, review that item directly instead of only changing a future default. If it reached the wrong audience, use the available item controls promptly and assess any personal information exposed.
  7. If the expected audience option is missing, do not publish sensitive material just to test it. Check the account type and official Help, or report the interface problem with a non-sensitive screenshot and app version. For content already copied or used to threaten you, follow the privacy or threats guide; changing an audience cannot guarantee retrieval.

The situation

Illustrative example

Hypothetical example: a creator uses a public Instagram profile but wants a family video on Facebook only for friends. They check the Facebook audience explicitly rather than assuming the two networks share the same viewers.

The situation and an improvement

What causes the issue

Share from Instagram and assume Facebook uses the same audience.

A more accurate version

Check the destination and current Facebook audience, then verify the published item.

More examples

A new confirmation appears

Facebook asks you to confirm the audience when you create a video.

What to do

Read the selected setting and scope. Do not dismiss it simply because earlier videos used Friends.

An old Reel is still public

You changed your default but an earlier video has a Public label.

What to do

Review that Reel’s own controls. Do not assume a future default rewrites older items or recalls copies.

We read the official source listed for this topic. Other Meta rules are reviewed separately.

Primary source reread: . This does not mean every supplementary source, translation or app screen was rechecked.

Meta’s June 2025 video announcement (displaying 14 July 2025) and 9 December 2025 composer update were read on 16 October 2026. Official indexed Help text on Reels audiences was reviewed; its direct page redirected to login/temporary-block content, so it is marked excerpt. The unified flow was announced as gradual. We did not test a profile, Page, cross-post or regional rollout; verify the control actually shown.
