How do I hide my online status on Instagram?

A ClearRules guidePublished: Updated: How we prepare guides

The short answer

Turn off Show activity status in Instagram settings. You will then stop seeing other people’s activity status too.

What to do

Choose the control for the problem you want to solve: activity status for online indicators, read receipts for whether a message was read, or notification settings for alerts on your own device. If you want to stop contact with a person, use the restriction and blocking guide instead of relying on an online-status switch.

  1. In settings, find Messages and story replies, then Show activity status. If the menu differs, try searching settings.
  2. Turn activity status off. Reopen that section to check that the relevant switch is off.
  3. If someone keeps bothering you, separately consider restricting or blocking them. The linked guide explains those choices.
  4. If other people’s online indicators disappear after you turn this off, that is the documented reciprocal effect. Check your own setting before treating a missing indicator as an app fault or evidence that someone blocked you. For “Seen” on messages, use the separate read-receipts guide below.

The situation

Illustrative example

You open Instagram for a recipe and a colleague immediately asks, “You are online — why haven’t you replied?” If you would rather not display your activity, check this setting.
