I do not want to see someone on Instagram or receive their messages. Which option fits?

A ClearRules guidePublished: Updated: How we prepare guides

The short answer

Tired of their posts? Mute them in your feed. Troubled by their comments and messages? Consider Restrict. Want to stop contact with the account? Use Block.

What this answer is based on

What to do

Name your goal first: see less, limit interactions or stop contact.

  1. To stop seeing their posts in your feed, find Mute. It changes what you see; it does not hide your posts from that person.
  2. With Restrict, their new comments on your posts stay hidden from others unless you approve them; you can review them. Messages move to requests, and the sender cannot see whether you have read them.
  3. To stop contact, open the account’s Block option. Read the option for other accounts they may have if offered. Report a specific threatening message or post separately.

The situation

Illustrative example

A colleague posts twenty holiday photos a day and you are tired of scrolling through them. Muting their posts can help. If someone instead insults you under every post, changing your own feed will not address that.

The situation and an improvement

What causes the issue

Mute someone’s posts and expect them to stop messaging you.

A more accurate version

Choose Restrict or Block for unwanted contact; use feed controls for their posts.
