How do I hide my Instagram stories from someone without changing who sees my ordinary posts?

A ClearRules guidePublished: Updated: How we prepare guides

The short answer

Add the relevant accounts to the list of people you hide stories from. This does not by itself hide your profile or ordinary posts. Making the account private, using Close Friends and blocking someone are separate choices.

What to do

Check the Instagram account you are using and the exact usernames you want to select. Display names can look alike. If you want only a small group to see a story, read the Close Friends guide before deciding which control to use.

  1. Open Instagram directly and check that you are in the intended profile. Identify the accounts to exclude before posting anything sensitive. Hiding a story cannot guarantee that it will not be copied.
  2. The official indexed mobile-style route is profile, the menu in the top right, then Story, live and location under Who can see your content. Open Hide story and live from. If your app uses different labels or placement, check the Help instructions for your device.
  3. Select the accounts you want to exclude, then use Back. Reopen the list and check that the correct usernames are still selected.
  4. You can also act from the list of people who viewed a story. Official Help describes opening the options beside a person’s name, choosing Hide your story and confirming Hide. Check the exclusion list afterwards. This does not undo a view that has already happened.
  5. Before posting the next story, check its audience and your account’s privacy. Story hiding leaves other kinds of access unchanged. Use the private-account, Close Friends or blocking guides if your goal is broader.
  6. To let someone see your stories again, return to the same list and deselect their account. Reopen the list to check the change before sharing. If you also post the story on Facebook, check that audience separately.
  7. If the control is missing or the selection will not save, check official Help for your device. For an apparent app fault, report the problem in the app with the exact error, app version and a relevant screenshot. Do not include passwords or login codes. No response time is established by these sources.

The situation

Illustrative example

For example, you want an existing colleague to keep seeing your ordinary posts but not your casual stories. Add that account to the story exclusion list, then check that the intended username remains selected.

The situation and an improvement

What causes the issue

Hide one story and assume the person's access to every part of your profile has changed.

A more accurate version

Select the intended account, verify the exclusion list and review other kinds of content separately.

More examples

Only a small group should see it

You want to share a personal update with a few friends rather than exclude a long list of people.

What to do

Compare Close Friends with story hiding before posting. Check the chosen audience for the actual story; neither choice prevents screenshots.

You want to undo the choice

You excluded an account earlier and now want it to see future stories.

What to do

Deselect the account in the same list and verify that it stays deselected. Do not treat this as restoring or withdrawing anything the person already saw.
