How can I stop someone opening Messenger while using my phone?
The short answer
If Messenger’s privacy settings offer App Lock, enable it and test reopening the app. This adds a device-level check; it does not change your account password. This guide is for people who can still sign in and want to protect their conversations in advance.
What this answer is based onWhat to do
Have your own phone ready and make sure you can complete its authentication. Choose a time when nobody urgently needs to borrow it. Change one protection at a time so you can tell which setting produced the result.
- Open Messenger settings and look in the privacy section. If App Lock is offered, read the on-screen explanation and enable that protection using the authentication shown. Do not look for the setting through a link someone sent you.
- Leave the app and open it again. If a re-lock delay is offered, test after the chosen interval. Check that chats do not open without the expected authentication; there is no need to ask someone else to read them as a test.
- If the option is absent or the check does not work, do not assume your chats are protected. Keep the phone locked rather than lending it unlocked. Note the model, app version and observed behavior for in-app help, without attaching private messages.
The situation
Imagine a friend needs to see a ticket on your phone. Before handing it over, you check whether they could simply switch from the ticket to your conversations.
The situation and an improvement
Enable a switch and immediately hand over an unlocked phone.
Test reopening and keep the device to yourself if the result is unclear.
More examples
Someone else sent messages
You notice activity you did not carry out.
What to do
Review logins and secure the account. A local app lock does not address a possible login elsewhere.
I forgot the history PIN
Messenger asks for a code to restore older conversations.
What to do
Use the chat-history recovery guide. Do not delete history or reinstall the app just to configure App Lock.
