I can sign in. Why are older messages missing?

A ClearRules guidePublished: How we prepare guides

The short answer

Restore encrypted history with your original storage PIN or a previously configured recovery method offered in Messenger.

What to do

Keep your working old phone signed in. Don't uninstall Messenger or delete secure storage to force a restore.

  1. Check the account. Login and sending restrictions are separate problems.
  2. Enter your original storage PIN or use a configured recovery method.
  3. If offered, request a one-time code on your old mobile device with Messenger. A desktop cannot receive it.
  4. Forgotten PIN? Reset it only from a device where you created or previously entered it.
  5. After December 2026, Google Drive keys won't restore history on new devices. Messenger will prompt you to create a PIN. This ends that recovery method; it doesn't delete chats or all backups.
