Can I edit a message I have already sent in Messenger?
The short answer
Yes, if editing is still available. Meta describes a window of up to 15 minutes after sending. If you gave the wrong time or address, do more than edit: the other person may already have read the first version.
What this answer is based onWhat to do
Check the correct details first, then find the particular message containing the mistake.
- Open the right conversation and check when you sent the message. If fewer than 15 minutes have passed, look for editing in your message’s menu; do not spend the window reinstalling the app.
- Choose editing if offered, correct the text and confirm the change. Read the message again in the chat to check that the time, date or address is now right.
- Send a short, separate correction if the mistake could affect someone’s plans: “Correction: we are meeting at 7 pm.” If editing is no longer offered, use that follow-up straight away and ask them to confirm any important details.
The situation
Example: you tell a friend to meet at 6 pm instead of the agreed 7 pm, then spot the mistake five minutes later.
The situation and an improvement
Quietly change the time and assume your friend will notice.
Correct the text and tell your friend the right time explicitly.
More examples
More than 15 minutes have passed
An older message contains the wrong address.
What to do
Send the correct address in a new message rather than promising to change the old one.
Autocorrect changed a word
One word is confusing, but the meeting arrangements are unchanged.
What to do
Edit the word if that option is available, then check the resulting sentence.
