My settings now say Meta Account. What should I check before changing anything?

A ClearRules guidePublished: How we prepare guides

The short answer

Meta is gradually replacing Accounts Center with Meta Account. Some settings apply across profiles in the same Meta Account; app-specific controls, including post audiences, remain separate. Start by checking the included profiles and the scope shown beside the setting. A new label alone is not a reason to merge profiles, reset a password or create another account.

What this answer is based on

What to do

Before making a change, write down the profile you want to affect and the result you want. Do not copy passwords or recovery codes into your notes.

  1. Open the installed Facebook or Instagram app yourself and enter its settings. Read the account notification there; do not start from a stranger’s “migration” link or send them a login code.
  2. Check whether you see Accounts Center or Meta Account and identify every included profile and device. If the label has not changed, this alone does not prove a fault: rollout is account-by-account.
  3. Locate the setting for your actual goal. For who sees a Facebook post or who can tag you on Instagram, check the relevant app’s controls. For a shared security setting, read which profiles it applies to before continuing.
  4. Review recovery contact details and two-factor authentication without disabling protection to simplify the screen. Confirm that you can still use the contact and method displayed. Meta Help describes two-factor authentication across profiles in the same Meta Account, except WhatsApp.
  5. If the screen proposes adding or moving a profile, stop and read the consequences. Do this only if it is your intended task. Meta allows separate Meta Accounts; a common password is optional, not a requirement to follow this guide.
  6. After a deliberate change, reopen the relevant setting and check the affected profiles. Keep a private note of what changed and when; do not assume removing a profile later restores the previous choices.
  7. If a control is missing, use the linked official Help and the app’s help options, noting the profile, app version, screen and error without secrets. If access is lost or an unfamiliar profile/session appears, use the separate recovery or unknown-login guide instead of repeatedly reorganizing accounts.

The situation

Illustrative example

Hypothetical example: you want to limit a Facebook post to friends. Check that post’s Facebook audience rather than changing a shared login setting for both Facebook and Instagram.

The situation and an improvement

What causes the issue

Change a shared setting without checking the profiles it affects.

A more accurate version

Identify the profile, read the scope, make one intended change and verify it.

More examples

Only one account has the new label

Two profiles show different settings layouts.

What to do

Check each profile’s available controls. Do not create duplicate accounts merely to make the screens match.

You want to separate work and personal profiles

You are considering moving a profile out of a Meta Account.

What to do

First check independent access and the settings that would remain. Read the current confirmation; do not assume earlier preferences will be restored.

Meta’s 23 April 2026 announcement and linked settings Help were read on 16 October 2026. The announcement describes a gradual transition over the following year; Help specifies selected locations and account-by-account availability. This is not a universal launch date or a tested account walkthrough. Practical checks below are ClearRules advice; no account was connected, separated or changed.

Report an inaccuracy

Include the guide link, language and wording that needs checking. Add an official source link if you have one. Do not send passwords, login codes or photos of identity documents.
