New Zealand — Where to get help in your country

Choose your country and what you need help with. See relevant organisations, requirements and next steps.

New Zealand — Available options

The number shows how many procedures are listed. It does not guarantee that your case will be accepted. Each option’s requirements are shown below.

Appeal an account restriction (1)

  • MBIE — locked small-business social-media accountsLocal body or procedure

    Business dispute assistance

The service checks whether your business and dispute qualify. Assistance does not guarantee a platform response or restored access.

    What to do

The authority appears in an official directory. We have not fully reviewed its local form or submission requirements. Use this link to find the authority; we have not confirmed that you can submit a complaint through it.

Find the complaints section or contact details. Check whether the body handles your issue and which documents it needs. This link is not a confirmed submission form.

For a locked New Zealand small-business account, the Privacy Commissioner directs users to small.business@mbie.govt.nz at MBIE. Explain the business, account, dates and appeal attempts. This is a request for assistance, not guaranteed restoration or a privacy complaint.

Appeal the removal of a post (1)

  • Oversight BoardInternational service · specific conditions

Independent review of an eligible decision

A review does not guarantee reversal. Do not duplicate a submission while the same case is still awaiting a response.

    What to do
    1. Open Meta’s final post decision and find the reference ID. Without it, this route is unavailable.
    2. Choose Submit an Appeal on the Board’s site, sign in to your active account and submit within Meta’s stated deadline.
    3. Check Track Your Appeal. Submitting does not mean the Board will select the case.

For eligible content decisions only: requires an active account, Meta’s final decision and a Meta-issued reference ID. The Board selects a limited number of cases. If the account is disabled and you cannot log in, this route does not fit.

Access or protect personal data (1)

  • Office of the Privacy CommissionerLocal body or procedure

    Protect personal-data rights

This route concerns data rights. Being unable to log in does not by itself prove a breach: this is not an account-recovery service. Investigations and remedies depend on local law.

    What to do
    1. Describe the specific data issue. For access requests, first ask Meta for the data and keep a copy of your request.
    2. Check local deadlines and requirements. Attach your request and reply, and explain which data rights were affected.
    3. Keep the submission confirmation and reference number. If asked for more information, reply within the same case.

The Commissioner expressly says ordinary social-media lockouts are unlikely to be resolved through it. Refusal to provide requested personal data is different: ask the company for it first.

Resolve a payment or service dispute (3)

  • Consumer Protection — MBIELocal body or procedure

Advice on rights and next steps

Check the service’s scope and any fees. Advice does not itself require Meta to restore an account.

    What to do
    1. Find the service’s contact details and choose your region if required.
    2. Briefly explain the situation. Ask what remedy you can seek and where to apply.
    3. Keep the submission confirmation and reference number. If asked for more information, reply within the same case.

Consumer Protection explains consumer rights and next steps. It cannot manage your complaint, investigate the dispute or enforce a remedy. Prepare the receipt and correspondence; separately check applicable law and enforceability for an overseas supplier.

  • Apple — Report a ProblemInternational service · specific conditions

    Consumer complaint

First identify the seller on the receipt: it may be Meta, Apple, Google or another company. A payment complaint does not guarantee account recovery.

    What to do
    1. Sign in to Report a Problem with the account shown on your receipt.
    2. Choose Request a refund, a reason and the purchase.
    3. After submitting, check the request status there.

Only purchases billed by Apple. Find the receipt and matching Apple Account. Country-specific refund eligibility applies; approval is not guaranteed.

  • Google Play — refund requestInternational service · specific conditions

    What to do
    1. Open the instructions below and select Request a refund.
    2. Missing purchase? Check order history and select Report a problem.
    3. Explain the refund reason. Track your existing request.

Report abuse, threats or scams (4)

  • NetsafeLocal body or procedure

    Report harm or an offence

This concerns harm or misconduct, not reversing any Meta restriction. If you face immediate danger, contact local emergency services.

    What to do
    1. Keep links, dates and evidence you can safely preserve. Do not redistribute illegal material; follow the service’s instructions on evidence.
    2. Read the service’s rules, choose the relevant type of harm and complete the report. State whether you have already reported it to Meta.
    3. Keep the submission confirmation and reference number. If asked for more information, reply within the same case.

Use Netsafe’s current incident-specific forms for bullying, intimate images, scams, personal-information misuse or other harm. Support is free and addresses online harm connected with New Zealand. It is not a general account-suspension appeal.

  • StopNCII.orgInternational service · specific conditions

    Help limit intimate-image sharing

The service helps limit sharing on partner platforms. It cannot remove everything from the internet or restore an account.

    What to do
    1. Check your age when the image was made and the service’s conditions.
    2. On the official site, use only material already on your device. You do not need to send the file itself.
    3. Keep the case details and follow the instructions for checking progress.

For intimate images of you taken at 18+, including threatened sharing. You need the file on your device. It stays there; a digital fingerprint is shared. Coverage is limited to participating public-facing platforms, not the whole internet or encrypted messages. Keep your case number and PIN.

  • District Court — Harmful Digital Communications ordersLocal body or procedure

Court orders for harmful digital communications

This is a specific Harmful Digital Communications Act procedure. Check the grounds for an order, applicant eligibility, prior Netsafe process, service and costs. It does not inherently require a money claim and is not an ordinary account appeal.

    What to do
    1. Normally use Netsafe first and obtain its summary. Check who may apply and whether a statutory exception applies.
    2. In the District Court form, identify the specific harm, evidence and order sought, such as takedown or stopping communications.
    3. Check filing and service requirements, required documents and costs. Keep court notices and comply with their deadlines.

After Netsafe handles serious harmful digital communications, a separate District Court route may be available. Orders can require takedown, cessation and other specified remedies. This differs from the Disputes Tribunal and is not a standard account appeal. Check requirements, documents and costs before filing.

Consider a court claim (2)

  • Disputes TribunalLocal body or procedure

    Hearing an eligible court claim

Small claims often concern monetary claims. The court may not have power to order account restoration. Consider fees, costs, deadlines, contract terms and local rules.

    What to do
    1. Read your region’s court rules. Check jurisdiction, claim limits and available remedies.
    2. Identify the correct defendant and service procedure. Prepare a timeline, evidence and an amount based on documented losses.
    3. Check required pre-action steps and fees. Use the court’s own form; this guide is not a court filing.

Check the Tribunal’s jurisdiction and correct respondent. The current limit is NZ$60,000; filing fees range from NZ$62 to NZ$496. Claims are usually brought within six years. Prepare evidence and settlement attempts. A foreign defendant or account-restoration request needs separate assessment.

Does every country have an account-recovery route?

We have not confirmed that every country has an account-recovery process outside Meta. This directory covers the listed countries, with options for data, payments, harmful content and, where available, account restrictions and court claims. Several links do not mean several ways to restore an account. We state when no suitable option has been found.

The review covers the entries in this directory. It does not establish that every possible route has been found. An accessible page, an applicable procedure and a successful outcome are different things.

How to use this directory

Different bodies handle different issues. A refused data request, a payment dispute and an account appeal involve separate procedures. Choose the one that matches your situation. The body you contact decides whether to accept the case and what action to take.

Each card shows when its sources were researched. No real complaints were submitted.
