How can I download my Instagram or Facebook data?
The short answer
Open settings and look for Accounts Center or Meta Account, whichever your account shows. Meta is replacing Accounts Center gradually, so the label can differ by account. Choose the correct profile when requesting an Instagram or Facebook data copy. This saves information; it does not recover account access.
What this answer is based onWhat to do
Decide what you need first: photos, posts or a broader archive. That makes the result easier to check.
- Distinguish downloading a copy from transferring information to another service. For a backup you keep yourself, choose the download route; before any transfer, check which service would receive your information.
- Open the account-management section shown in your settings: Accounts Center or Meta Account. Look for Your information and permissions or the available download/export option, and choose the correct profile. Labels and paths can differ during the rollout; use current in-app Help if the option is missing.
- Select the information and date range if offered. Submit the request and check its progress in the same section.
- When the copy is ready, download it and open a few important files. Store the archive somewhere other people cannot access it.
- Before deleting anything, compare the copy with your original goal: the correct profile, the years you need, and several important photos or posts. If something is missing, review the profile, information categories and date range you requested, then request another copy if needed. A completed request alone does not show that your backup contains everything you wanted.
The situation
Your phone only has recent pictures, but Instagram has five years of family trips. Before leaving, you want those memories on your computer. Request a copy and check the files before deciding what to do with the profile.

On 21 October 2026, we reread Meta’s 2023 data-export announcement and its April 2026 explanation of the gradual Meta Account rollout. This supports the export purpose and account-dependent naming, not a verified current menu for every account. Supplementary Facebook and Instagram Help pages were not reverified in this check. No individual account export was tested.
