How do I unlink Instagram and Facebook or change what they share?

A ClearRules guidePublished: How we prepare guides

The short answer

First identify whether you mean accounts grouped in Accounts Center or a professional Instagram account connected to a Facebook Page. Accounts Center manages connected experiences and login; the Page connection supports business management. Check the account and Page names before changing either.

What this answer is based on

What to do

Before separating accounts, confirm a working sign-in and recovery method for each one. Do not sign out of your only working session just to test whether unlinking helped.

  1. List the accounts shown in Accounts Center or your updated Meta Account. Separately inspect any Facebook Page linked to your professional Instagram. A Page connection is not the same as grouping your personal Facebook and Instagram accounts.
  2. Choose the smallest change that meets your goal. To stop automatic personal-profile sharing, check Sharing across profiles, including the source, destination and content type. Previously cross-posted content can remain visible; review those copies separately if needed.
  3. Before changing login connections, check your recovery email or phone and available sign-in methods. If Instagram was created through Facebook, Meta may require you to create an Instagram password when separating it. Use forgot-password if you need help first.
  4. For Accounts Center membership, look for Accounts or Manage accounts, then the selected account's Remove option and its explanation. Associated profiles are removed from that Accounts Center too. Do not choose account deactivation or deletion when your goal is unlinking.
  5. For the business Page link, use the professional Instagram profile's Page connection or the Page's linked-account controls. Verify the Page and your permissions first; business-portfolio access may also matter. Review warnings about shared tools, access and any subscription before confirming a change.
  6. Afterward, recheck connections, sharing and security. For lost access, use the Page-admin-access or login guide. An unfamiliar link alone is not proof of compromise: check sessions and change notices first, using hacked-account only for unauthorized changes or takeover signs. If a suspension names another account, use the linked-Instagram suspension guide.

The situation

Illustrative example

For example, a florist wants personal Instagram stories to stop appearing on Facebook while keeping the shop's professional Instagram connected to its Page. Check the story-sharing destination first, then change that setting.

If the old shared-login switch is missing

Your accounts are grouped, but you cannot find Logging in with accounts.

What to do

Check Meta's current membership instructions. Do not assume turning off cross-posting also stops cross-account login.

If a former colleague still has access

The business Page is connected correctly, but its access list contains someone who should no longer manage it.

What to do

Review the specific Page and business permissions with the authorized owner. Unlinking accounts does not establish that every separate permission was removed.

We read the official source listed for this topic. Other Meta rules are reviewed separately.

Checked on 6 October 2026. Read Meta's public Accounts Center guidance on the 2026 cross-account login change, moving accounts out, sharing controls and password implications, plus its Meta Account transition page. Read official indexed excerpts on separate Facebook Page connections, Page permissions and previously cross-posted content. Full Facebook Page Help Center articles returned login/temporary-block screens and were not inspected in full. No account settings, permissions, subscriptions or cross-posting were tested or changed; no automatic enforcement-transfer claim was verified.

Report an inaccuracy

Include the guide link, language and wording that needs checking. Add an official source link if you have one. Do not send passwords, login codes or photos of identity documents.

Examples are made up to explain the guidance. Meta decides individual account and content cases.
