How can I send a large document through Messenger?

A ClearRules guidePublished: How we prepare guides

The short answer

Meta describes sending files up to 100MB from the + button in a Messenger chat, including Word, PDF and Excel files. For a larger file, prepare a smaller copy or agree another way to send it.

What this answer is based on

What to do

Check the recipient, filename and size. Keep the original separately and remove information the recipient does not need.

  1. Check the file details on your phone. If it exceeds 100MB, export a smaller copy and confirm that the text and required pages remain legible.
  2. Open the correct Messenger conversation, tap + and select the file if that option is available. Check the filename and recipient again before sending.
  3. Wait for the result and ask the recipient whether the document opens. If sending fails, note the error and try a stable connection; agree another channel if the file is too large.

The situation

Illustrative example

Example: you need to send a 125MB PDF containing photographs. Repeatedly pressing Send will not make the file smaller.

The situation and an improvement

What causes the issue

Keep retrying the same 125MB attachment.

A more accurate version

Check the limit, prepare a legible copy and confirm receipt.

More examples

A smaller file still fails

The PDF is under the limit but will not send.

What to do

Check the connection and record the error; size may not be the only cause.

The recipient cannot open it

The attachment arrives but the required software is missing.

What to do

Agree a suitable format, such as PDF, and check the new copy before sending it.
