How can I watch a story or save a video without using a third-party service?

A ClearRules guidePublished: Updated: How we prepare guides

The short answer

First choose your goal. To watch, open the post in Instagram or Facebook. To return later, save a bookmark inside the service. For a file, use an available download option or export your own data. ClearRules does not download other people’s videos or unlock private stories.

What to do

Want to show a friend? A link or the built-in Share option is often enough. You usually do not need to download and upload it again.

  1. To watch a story, open the creator’s Instagram profile and choose an available story. If the account is private and you do not follow it yet, send a follow request and wait for approval. The creator may be able to see that you watched. Do not give your password to sites promising access to private stories.
  2. To keep it for later, look for the bookmark icon or Save on the post or reel. Find it later in the service’s Saved section. This does not put a file in your phone gallery or create a backup of the post.
  3. Need a file? Open the post’s menu or Share options and check whether the service offers a download. If there is no button, ask the creator for the file. For your own content, use data export; for your own Facebook Live, check for Download video.

Which situation applies to you?

Watch a story

Open Instagram and the creator’s profile. For a private account, your follow request must be approved. This does not guarantee anonymous viewing.

Go to Instagram
Download my own photos and videos

Use the guide to getting a copy of your own data. It explains account selection, export contents and saving the file.

A reel has no download button

Not every reel offers a download. Check current Instagram Help. If the option is missing, save a bookmark or ask the creator for the file. We could not read this Help page in full.

Publish someone else’s video

Before uploading someone else’s video, check permission for both the video and its music. Using a built-in repost option, where available, is different from uploading a new copy.

Using someone else’s content

The situation

Illustrative example

“I saved a recipe but the video is not in my gallery.” You made a bookmark. Return to Instagram and open Saved. If you need an offline file, separately check whether a download is offered.

More examples

Keep your own broadcast

“I ran a Facebook workshop and want the recording on my laptop.”

What to do

Open your Live video and its menu. If the recording and Download video option are available, download it and check the file. To copy more of your account data, open the data-export guide.

Post someone else’s video

“I downloaded a funny reel. Can I upload it to my shop’s page if I credit the creator?”

What to do

Credit alone is not permission. To share the original post, check the available Share or built-in repost option. Before a separate upload, check permission for the video and music, especially for advertising.
