Why can't I send a DM or reply on Instagram or Messenger?

A ClearRules guidePublished: How we prepare guides

The short answer

Start with the exact error and whether the problem affects one conversation or several. A person's blocking or message settings, a temporary sending restriction and an app or connection fault need different next steps; a failed message alone does not identify the cause.

What to do

Save the error text, time and affected feature before retrying. Repeatedly sending the same message is not a useful way to diagnose the problem.

  1. Read the notice without guessing. Note whether it names a time limit, policy decision, unavailable person, message request or connection error. Separate an actual send failure from a sent message that has no reply.
  2. If only one conversation is affected, review your own blocked accounts and the chat's notice. The recipient's settings or account availability may matter. Do not use another account or repeated requests to get around someone's contact choices.
  3. For a new Instagram conversation, check whether you are sending a request. Recipient settings can limit who can reach them, and some requests allow text only until accepted. Teen safety settings can impose additional limits; do not change age information to bypass them.
  4. If the app explicitly restricts sending, follow the stated end time or next step and use a review option only if offered. Meta describes temporary Messenger restrictions after high message volume or policy violations, but there is no single duration established here. For Instagram-wide action limits, open the related action-blocked guide.
  5. If several chats fail without a restriction notice, update the official app, restart it and check a reliable connection and available storage. Widespread failures can be technical, but are not proof of an outage. Use the app-not-working guide for further checks.
  6. If the fault remains, use the app's problem-reporting option with the error and reproducible steps. If you cannot sign in at all, switch to the login-trouble guide rather than a messaging appeal.

The situation

Illustrative example

For example, a photographer can reply to existing customers but cannot attach a photo to a first message to a new contact. Check whether the chat is an unaccepted message request before treating this as an account-wide restriction.

More examples

If a restriction has an end time

The notice explicitly says sending is unavailable until a stated time.

What to do

Keep that notice and follow its instructions; avoid repeated test messages or tools promising instant unblocking.

Instagram blocks a follow, like or comment

If only one person is unreachable

Other existing conversations still work, but this chat does not.

What to do

Check your own blocking settings and the visible notice. Leave the recipient's choice alone; do not label it a platform-wide ban.

Checked on 6 October 2026. Read official indexed Help Center excerpts about Messenger troubleshooting, temporary sending restrictions, blocking and Instagram message requests. Read Meta's public article on stricter message settings and text-only requests. Full Facebook and Instagram Help Center pages returned login, temporary-block or fetch-error screens; their account-specific menus were not checked. No messages were sent and no account or live outage was tested.
